Privacy Policy

Buoys Last updated: June 29, 2026

Overview

Buoys is designed with your privacy in mind. The app collects limited analytics data to understand app usage, improve reliability, and prioritize future improvements. Buoys does not use advertising identifiers, sell personal data, or track you across apps or websites.

Data Collection

Buoys stores your preferred NOAA buoy station IDs locally on your device so the app and widget can show your selected buoy readings.

Buoys also generates a random anonymous analytics identifier. This identifier is used to understand aggregate usage, such as daily active app users and feature usage. It is not your Apple device identifier, advertising identifier, name, email address, or account ID.

Network Requests

The app and widget connect to a backend API to retrieve publicly available ocean buoy data from NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center. These requests may include the selected buoy station ID, the anonymous analytics identifier, whether the request came from the app or widget, basic app/version metadata, IP address, and user agent.

The app may send analytics events to the backend API, including app opens, screen views, and other app actions. These events are used for product analytics and reliability monitoring.

Third-Party Services

Buoys uses PostHog for product analytics. Analytics data is used only to understand and improve Buoys. Buoys does not use analytics data for third-party advertising or cross-app tracking.

Children’s Privacy

Buoys does not knowingly collect any information from children.
